Southampton manager Tonda Eckert is on Borussia Mönchengladbach’s list of potential candidates this summer if they go for a new manager.

Rheinische Post report on the situation at the German club today. According to their information, a potential long list of options are being looked at ahead of the summer.

Borussia Mönchengladbach decision

The big question at this moment in time is whether Borussia Mönchengladbach stick with Eugen Polanski or not. That situation is currently being assessed by those in charge of the club.

An internal solution to follow Polanski is unlikely, ruling out U23 coach Oliver Kirch. A more logical approach would be to look in the Bundesliga, where several coaches are available. But there are doubts whether any of the more appealing names could be lured.

That could, therefore, see Mönchengladbach turned to candidates who have ‘enjoyed surprising success abroad’. Southampton’s Tonda Eckert would fall into that category.

Southampton success

He started as an analyst for the German Football Association (DFB) at 18, worked in Cologne, Salzburg, Leipzig, Munich, and Genoa, and has now led Southampton to the Premier League promotion playoffs. He would be seen as a potential exciting, young and talented boss for the future.

Of course, luring him back to Germany could be a difficult ask. That would particularly be the case if he Eckert leads Southampton back to the Premier League.

Mönchengladbach may need to wait to see what happens in the Play-Off Final before even attempting any moves.

But Eckert is a name on their list, albeit an extensive one. His work and current success at Southampton has not gone unnoticed back in his homeland.

And if Mönchengladbach do decide to part ways with Polanski this summer, he could be the one that they turn to. That decision has not been made yet, but it will be in the coming weeks. At that point, they may turn their attention to the Southampton manager.
