Alexis Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion in June 2023.

The Argentina international’s performances for the Seagulls convinced Liverpool to bet on him.

Brighton took the midfielder from Argentinos Juniors in January 2019 and Friday’s edition of Clarín gives an insight into his transfer to The Amex.

The newspaper has a report on data having a huge role in modern football.

They explain GPS is used to capture several metrics including ‘heat-map, aerobic autonomy, cardiac recovery, muscle fatigue’ of a player. The data is analysed, and it gives a manager assistance to know in-depth about a player’s situation.

The data can also help in securing a transfer and that’s exactly what happened in the 26-year-old’s case. Brighton travelled to Buenos Aires to negotiate with Argentinos Juniors for Mac Allister.

The report states the Argentine club’s president, Cristian Malaspina, saw the transfer was slipping away before they reached an agreement because of the player’s metrics.

Brighton explained to Argentinos Juniors that Mac Allister suited their system. However, he didn’t meet the conditions requested by the English club’s sporting department.

Clarín state Brighton wanted the current Liverpool player to improve his ‘kilometres travelled’ [distance covered] on heat-maps. Once this was done, they secured his services.

Mac Allister’s growth at Brighton helped him become a regular for Argentina, with whom he won the World Cup in 2022, and secure a move to Liverpool in 2023.
