Former AC Milan Chief Football Officer Zvonimir Boban has told the Italian media they were close to signing Dominik Szoboszlai during his time in the role with the Serie A side.
Szoboszlai has since signed for Liverpool after impressing for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, and Boban is annoyed he wasn’t given the go-ahead to close the deal.
Calciomecarto have covered comments Boban has made about his brief spell as part of the AC Milan hierarchy and he’s revealed they came very close to signing the Hungarian international when he was playing for Red Bull Salzburg.
The ex-Croatia international said the Italian side reached an agreement with the Austrian club, as they were prepared to pay his buyout clause.
“We could have also have taken Szoboszlai, everything was agreed: €20m of the clause with Salzburg,” said the Croatian.
Szoboszlai made his name with the two Red Bull teams, making nearly over 200 appearances during his time with them.
The 24-year-old got his big move during the 2023 summer transfer window when Liverpool signed him from Leipzig, and the central midfielder has been influential in his two seasons at Anfield.
Since joining the Premier League champions, Szoboszlai has made 92 appearances, scoring 14 goals.
