Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Gonçalo Guedes is currently on loan at Benfica where he hasn’t enjoyed regular game time this season. The winger wants to leave the Eagles and Villarreal are keen on signing him in the winter market.
The 27-year-old played under the La Liga side’s coach, Marcelino García Toral, at Valencia and the latter is keen on reuniting with him at his current club.
This is reported again by AS, who add the Spanish club have reached an agreement with both Guedes and Wolves.
Benfica have to agree to cut short the Portugal international’s temporary stay, so that he can join the Yellow Submarine this month. The report says ‘everything indicates that this is the final week’ for the track leading to him.
After the Eagles open the exit door, Guedes should arrive to carry out medical tests and complete his move to Villarreal. Therefore, this is the ‘key week’ in their efforts to sign the attacker.
Earlier this month, Benfica manager Roger Schmidt complained about not having enough players at his disposal due to injuries. A Bola highlights that and add it wouldn’t make sense for the manager and club to let go of the Wolves owned player before key fixtures.
At the same time, Benfica are working on signing Estudiantes’ Benjamín Rollheiser. They have a pre-agreement for him to arrive in the summer but the operation could be brought forward this month.
If Rollheiser were to arrive in January, Benfica could part ways with Guedes sooner.
