On August 18th, the Daily Mail reported Everton and Atlético Madrid are in advanced talks for Santiago Arias.
Marcel Brands, the Toffees director of football, knows the right-back first hand after signing him for PSV Eindhoven in 2013.
Everton’s interest in the defender has been discussed in today’s edition of AS. It’s claimed the 28-year-old is ‘not clear about his future’ with Los Rojiblancos.
Diego Simeone has Arias, Kieran Trippier and Šime Vrsaljko as the three right-backs in the squad.
The England international is the first-choice player in that position, while one of the other two will serve as back-up for the former Tottenham Hotspur man.
Online, AS explain one among Arias and Vrsaljko will have to leave the club this summer to avoid ‘overbooking’.
It’s claimed the South American is the favourite to stay, but what plays against him is that Arias has ‘more market’ than the Croatian.
Therefore, Atlético would prefer to sell him over Vrsaljko as the Colombian’s sale would generate more funds, which in turn will help the La Liga side in making new signings this summer.
This would come as a welcome boost for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who are said to be chasing Arias.
Arias has three more years left on his contract and AS doesn’t mention the fee needed to take him away from Atlético.
