Everton star Amadou Onana has insisted he is not surprised by his development this season, but isn’t finished improving just yet.
The Belgian star has sat down for an interview with Sporza ahead of the international break, where he will be a part of Belgium’s squad under Domenico Tedesco.
The midfielder has been a key player for Everton this season following a move from French side Lille in the summer transfer window.
He arrived at Goodison Park after being a regular for the French side last season, making 42 appearances in all competitions and 1779 minutes of action.
Most of those came as a substitute, though, with him managing just 11 starts in 36 games in Ligue 1 and two in eight in the Champions League.
That has not been the case at Everton, where he was thrown into the mix instantly and has since started 24 of 26 appearances in the Premier League.
That’s seen him earn a growing reputation and international recognition, with him now an established member of Belgium’s squad.
He made his debut in June last year and has since been a regular, playing in two of their three games at the World Cup in Qatar.
It’s been a rapid rise for the Everton man since the summer, although he insists he is not surprised by it in the slightest.
“People always say ‘the sky is the limit’, but I would like to aim even higher in my life and career,” he told Sporza.
“Goals, assists, titles, victories… I want the maximum of everything. Without putting a limit on it.
“Am I surprised where I am now? No, not really. For the outside world it may have gone a bit fast, but for me it has been a long and difficult course.
“I’m now just trying to prove myself and fight doubts. I never doubt myself, but I always question myself. There is an important nuance difference.
“I always take stock: what am I doing well and what I have done less well today. Not only on the field, but also in my personal life.”
