Oscar Zambrano is not set to return to Liga de Quito from Hull City, despite reports suggesting he could be going back to the Ecuadorian side this summer.

That’s according to El Universo, who have comments from Liga de Quito president Isaac Álvarez asserting that the 21-year-old will remain with Hull City this year.

Zambrano joined Hull on a loan deal last August but has been absent since the beginning of November when he was hit with a doping ban after failing a CONMEBOL test after the 2024 Recopa Sudamericana final.

That had led to reports that he was set to return to Ecuador this summer when his loan deal comes to an end. That’s due to expire at the end of June.

However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport recently reduced Zambrano’s sanction, meaning he will be able to return to play in November.

And it seems that will lead to an extend stay at Hull, with Álvarez insisting they are already working on the deal and a change in the terms.

“His status has not changed. Several people who saw a statement from Hull City have stated that he no longer belongs to that team, but that is not the case,” the director is quoted as saying in an interview on Cobertura radio.

“What Hull City clearly expressed is that, for players whose contracts are due to end in June, the clause we have between clubs establishes that they have priority and will have to execute it this month, with the opportunity to do so even until the end of May.

“The technical secretariat and the sporting director, Eduardo (Álvarez), expressed it yesterday: we are not going to count on Óscar, that’s the truth, we can’t. Basically, Hull City is going to renew him. There will be some things we can improve or that perhaps will be good for both of us, but he is getting closer to returning to the pitch and Hull City wants him.”
