When Brighton & Hove Albion winger Ansu Fati was called up by Spain this month, it seemed like a great chance for him to relaunch himself with the national team.
The 20-year-old had missed out on their last squad, and after some fresh air following his move to the Seagulls, manager Luis de la Fuente showed big support for him.
Things didn’t go as expected, though. Fati stayed on the bench against Scotland, and after 45 minutes against Norway, he’s now criticised by AS.
The outlet features a story claiming the Brighton player has ‘missed an opportunity’ by putting in a poor performance, as only his upcoming games with the Seagulls will tell whether he’ll get a new chance to play for the national team.
‘Dull, erratic, lacking spark and miles away from the level that once captivated the planet, Ansu missed an opportunity as important as it was necessary to redeem himself. His numbers reveal it. No shots taken, neither on target nor off target, zero completed dribbles, only one of six duels won, zero successful crosses and up to seven turnovers.’
Since joining Brighton on a loan from Barcelona, Fati has one goal in seven appearances for the club, and is still fighting to have a place in Roberto De Zerbi’s starting team.
The winger doesn’t only need to prove himself at the Seagulls, but also at the national team. As it stands the Catalan media are sure Barcelona will look to sell him, so he needs to attract buyers.
