With Aston Villa star Emiliano Martinez being one of the figures responsible for taking Argentina to the World Cup final, it’s natural that the media wonders why he’s not playing for any of Europe’s top clubs.
So as Spanish outlet Marca today features a story about the goalkeeper where they highlight his career, this topic is brought by one of the managers he had in the past.
The website managed to speak to coach José Gomes, who worked with him long before he joined Aston Villa. That was at Reading, whom Martinez had joined on a loan from Arsenal.
Gomes could only praise the Argentine goalkeeper, and claimed that the 30-year-old has the skills to play for a club with bigger aspirations.
“Psychologically he is very good. He withstands pressure well and does not let himself be influenced by anything. In addition, he is very strong in the air game: he attacks crosses safely and forcefully. He meets another very important requirement that we were looking for: he has great footwork”.
“The pressure doesn’t scare him. With all due respect to Aston Villa, he has the necessary qualities to make the leap to a team that can aspire to everything.”
So far in Argentina’s campaign, Martinez conceded five goals and kept three clean sheets in six appearances.
Regardless of a potential title on Sunday, he’s already considered a national team hero, and will be back to Aston Villa with high morale.
If that will impact in a potential departure from the club, only time will tell.
