With Bayern Munich frequently fighting for the top talents in European football, we today get to see interesting quotes from their former president Uli Hoeneß.

As their ex-chief was interviewed by the Frankfurter Allgemeine, he talked about some potential signings the Bundesliga side analysed, and a couple of them ended up at Arsenal and Chelsea.

One of them is Declan Rice, with Arsenal investing €116m to take him from West Ham United last summer. Hoeneß made it clear that he doesn’t think the midfielder is worth that much, regardless of his good appearances for the Gunners.

“I consciously looked at him. He’s a very good player, but with all due respect: I wouldn’t spend €120m on him even today. Such sums are too high for his club: We as FC Bayern simply cannot afford that,” said Hoeneß.

The former Bayern Munich president also talked about Moises Caicedo. He claimed Chelsea overpaid when signing him from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer, saying the Bundesliga side would have no conditions to pay for that.

“Or the week before I looked at Moises Caicedo. I thought to myself: Spend €127m on him? Others are welcome to do that. But FC Bayern will certainly never do that because it is simply too much money for us – regardless of the qualities of this player.”

Hoeneß certainly has a point when claiming players are getting too expensive, although it’s not only Arsenal and Chelsea who’ve been having to make some large investments to get their signing done. After all, Bayern Munich spent €95m to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur last summer despite him having less than a year on his contract.
