It’s fair to say that relations between the nation of France and Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez are not the best, and they weren’t going to improve this week either.

With Unai Emery’s side taking on Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League this week, it’s the tun of Bernard Lama to send a dig, with his comments relayed by RMC Sport.

Lama played for both PSG and in England – for West Ham, meaning he’ll be keeping a close eye on the Champions League quarter-final clash this week.

The former French goalkeeper will have a particular interest in Emiliano Martinez, who is due a hostile reception to say the least.

The Aston Villa number one is still public enemy number one in French football after his antics in the World Cup final in Qatar and numerous other comments since that point.

He’ll have to be at the top of his game to keep out a rampant PSG side this time around, with many believing the French side are currently the best in Europe and potentially on course to win the Champions League for the first time in their history this year.

The digs will be aimed at him throughout, but Lama has got his in early, insisting the Aston Villa star isn’t as good as many think.

“He’s a bit annoying with his provocations. I don’t like that,” he said.

“But otherwise, he’s still a good goalkeeper, nothing more. He’s not a great goalkeeper. He’s a good goalkeeper who has good spells, who had his spell at the 2022 World Cup. He’s not THE great goalkeeper.”
