RB Leipzig sporting director Rouven Schröder has revealed they decided to cancel Fabio Carvalho’s loan deal from Liverpool, as they were unconvinced by the player’s desire to fight for a place in the team.
The sporting director has been speaking to various media outlets at a press conference, which RB Live were a part of.
That inevitably saw questions being asked about what had happened with Carvalho, whose loan deal from Liverpool was cancelled at the end of last month.
The youngster joined the German side on loan in the summer in search of regular first team football, which wasn’t on offer at Anfield.
Things did not go to plan for him with the Bundesliga side, though, as he failed to earn a regular first team place and managed to feature in just 11% of the available minutes in the league before his departure.
Leipzig had initially insisted they would not be cancelling his loan deal, and he would remain with them, before then surprisingly announcing that the player would be returning to Liverpool in January.
He’s since been loaned out to Hull City for the remainder of the season and now Schröder has explained why they let him leave.
“We consciously chose Fabio last summer,” he said.
“He had a great season with Fulham in the English second division, which is very physical. We said to ourselves: great talent, good age, has already gained his experience.
“Still, you only get to know a player as an end product when he’s there. Fabio has a great character. But he realized: ‘Okay, there’s a competitor here, I have to do more!’ And we noticed that he didn’t want to face the competition.”
“We asked ourselves the question: Do we feel more comfortable with a man or are we clear and straight and say: Listen, if you don’t want to go with us, then we’ll end the loan. You shouldn’t be afraid of a break-off.”
