Nolberto Solano, well remembered at Newcastle United, believes the Tyneside club are not utilising Miguel Almirón’s qualities very well.

Solano moved to Europe for the first time when the Magpies signed him in 1998 and he went on to have two spells at St James’ Park.

The Peruvian knows the brand of football played in England, having spent time at Aston Villa, West Ham United, Leicester City and Hull City during his playing career.

Almirón arrived in Europe when Newcastle took him from Atalanta United in January 2019. Rafael Benítez was in charge when he signed and the Spaniard was replaced by Steve Bruce later that year.

The advantage of knowing the Premier League side very well has seen Solano suggest Almirón didn’t make the right choice by signing for Newcastle in the current era.

“It’s tough to play in the Premier League, all teams are very competitive and everyone plays to win. I was lucky enough to play for several teams, but where I was at Newcastle the most years, I know the club well,” Solano told Crónica.

“Miguel Almirón is a great player, but he came to Newcastle at a bad time. I see Miguel defending more than attacking, that is why he did not manage to display all his talent, because he is talented.”

Since he arrived in England, Almirón hasn’t been consistent for Newcastle and has managed eight goals and three assists in 70 league matches.
