Aston Villa goalkeeper Dibu Martínez has a minor fracture in his hand but is not in danger of missing the World Cup.

Journalist Gastón Edul reports that the Aston Villa goalkeeper has undergone an examination on the injury and it is positive news.

No surgery required

According to the Argentine journalist, the Aston Villa and Argentina number one does not require surgery on the injury.

The 33-year-old confirmed this week that he had injured his hand in the pre-match warmup before the Europa League final win over Freiburg.

He refused to miss out on that game, though. Instead he stepped away from the warm up while Aston Villa’s medical staff taped up the finger.

“Today I broke my finger during warmups. But I didn’t see it as a bad thing,” he told journalists following Aston Villa’s win.

“I’ve never broken a finger before and every time I tried to catch the ball, the finger would just slip away in the other direction. But these are just things you have to go through.”

World Cup hopes alive

Edul now reports that no surgery is needed on the injury. Instead, he’ll be out for around 20 days recovering from the injury.

According to the journalists information, the Aston Villa goalkeeper is aiming to be ready for Argentina’s first match at the World Cup. They start their defence of the trophy on June 17th against Algeria. They then take on Austria five days later and Jordan on June 28th.

There is confidence he will make both of those games. But he is set to sit out their friendlies before that. Argentina take on Honduras on June 7th then Iceland on June 9th.

It seems the plan is to leave the Aston Villa goalkeeper out of those games, to ensure he’ll be fully fit for the World Cup and defending their crown.
