Emiliano Buendía is set to return to Aston Villa this summer, with Bayer Leverkusen electing against making his loan move a permanent one.

That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who reports that the decision on the midfielder is ‘confirmed and final’.

Buendía joined the German side on loan in the January transfer window after falling down the pecking order under Unai Emery this season. His move away from Villa Park provided Aston Villa with space to sign the likes of Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford.

The Argentine was hoping to kickstart his career again under Xabi Alonso but has managed just 13 appearances, totalling 318 minutes, and two goals since his arrival.

That’s not been enough to convince them on a permanent move and Plettenberg reports that a decision on the Aston Villa midfielder is now ‘confirmed and final’. He, alongside Mario Hermoso, will be returning to his parent club.

What happens after that remains to be seen, with the Argentine seemingly not in Emery’s plans moving forwards either and now potentially facing a summer in which he needs to find himself a new permanent home.
