Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst has been warned he must pick the right club for his playstyle amid interest from Tottenham.

The German striker has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs over the last year after his impressive performances in the Bundesliga in the past two seasons.

Tottenham were keen on his signature last summer after he managed 16 goals in 32 games in the Bundesliga last season, with the player later confirming their interest had been ‘concrete’.

They were then linked once again come January, with Weghorst continuing to impress and already matching his 16 goal tally from last season in 25 games this season.

Weghorst dismissed the interest but later hinted that he was open to a move this year and would like to play for a Champions League club.

Tottenham are sure to be linked once again if the striker makes it clear he wants to move, but he has been warned by former coach Anton Wennemers that he needs to choose carefully if he does.

“I didn’t expect him to be that good. He’s learned a lot. He was almost on the bench at Tottenham, of course,” he told Voetbal Primeur.

“I have to see whether he can cope with the even stronger physical defenders in England. But Ruud van Nistelrooy did it too.

“Weghorst has to choose the right club. Just look at Donny van de Beek. If a team’s game is not geared for you and if the game doesn’t suit you, it’s going to be a tough job.

“Although Wout, with his physicality and drive, can always mean something to a team, it’s easier for him than for Van de Beek.”
