Last summer, there were repeat claims from Germany about Tottenham Hotpsur interest in signing VfL Wolfsburg’s Wout Weghorst.
The striker had revealed the north London club “got serious” before the window closed, but the deal never materialised.
Spurs, instead, ended up taking Carlos Vinícius on loan from Benfica, and he is currently Harry Kane’s backup at the club.
Wolfsburg have benefited from the Dutchman’s stay as he’s been directly involved [14 goals and two assists] in 50 percent of his club’s goals scored [32] in the Bundesliga.
The German side sit third in the table after accumulating 38 points and are three points behind second placed RB Leipzig.
Wolfsburg are in a good position to qualify for next season’s Champions League and Weghorst believes a lack of European competition this term will benefit them in the coming months.
“Many of our competitors still have the additional burden of the international games, which we don’t. That can be an advantage for us. If we continue like this, we have a great chance of qualifying for the Champions League,” he told Kicker.
Despite his immediate focus is on helping Wolfsburg finish in the top four, there has been no change in the Netherlands international’s desire to play in the Premier League.
Kicker then points out the 28-year-old ‘spoke to Tottenham’ and his form this campaign should attract attention from across Europe.
“My ambitions haven’t changed. I want to achieve the highest that is possible for me. I wouldn’t leave Wolfsburg for every club, they should really fit really well. Especially if we qualify for the Champions League,” Weghorst stressed.
In the event Wolfsburg make it to the Europe’s top club competition, Tottenham will likely also have to offer Champions League football, if they want to sign the frontman in the summer.
José Mourinho’s side are eighth in the table with 37 points and if they manage to win their game in hand, they will be level on points with Liverpool, who are currently in fourth spot.
