Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Carlos Miguel has admitted he knows he can’t win over Corinthians fans, despite his efforts to do so.
ESPN cover comments from the 26-year-old today made during an appearance on the Resenha programme.
The goalkeeper has avoided appearing in the Brazilian media much since his €4m move to Nottingham Forest in July last year.
He is very much a disliked figure at his former club, where he spent three years after joining on a free transfer in 2021.
That stems from his move last year, with many feeling that he had done the Brazilian club dirty with the manner in which his move to Nottingham Forest happened.
Corinthians had given the starting spot to Carlos Miguel after letting legend Cássio, who had been with the club over a decade, depart. Within weeks, he had then decided to join Nottingham Forest, rather than signing a new deal with the Brazilians.
Miguel has since come out and admitted the whole affair was a tense one, before putting the blame on Corinthians for not offering him a new deal sooner. Now he admits he’s given up trying to convince everyone that he was the bad guy.
“My relationship (with the fans) is calm, great, but sometimes we know that our decision, as I said, will not please 30 million people, but I have to think that the decision is mine, not theirs,” he said.
“So, I knew that, I knew it would be difficult, that many people would be upset, but that’s human nature. A fanatical fan, a Corinthians fan is a fanatic in itself. And you have to be fanatical about the club, I myself am a Corinthians fan today.
“I don’t need to do a lot of things, I lower my head, listen, let people talk, think they’re right to do what they do, or some journalists who talk… a lot of things, when I left (Corinthians) I was very sad, that’s why I don’t go on shows very often because people often declare war.
“It wasn’t for me, but for my family, my aunts, my girlfriend, my friends, my brother. Things like: ‘if you see him on the street, curse him, do this’, very bad things to do.
“Many people don’t understand and don’t know how to put themselves in my shoes. I’ll never get angry, fight with anyone. I’ll always stay calm, because in life we can’t wish bad things on anyone because they’ll come back to you in kind.”
