Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeneß has insisted Oliver Glasner wanted to join the club from Crystal Palace this summer, but they didn’t have the power to get him.
That’s according to his latest comments, relayed by FCB Inside, made during a recent trip to amateur club SV Seligentenporten.
Bayern Munich found themselves in something of a mess this summer in their hunt for a new manager after sticking to their plans to part ways with Thomas Tuchel.
The German club appeared to pass through an extensive list of coaches, all of whom either turned them down or were deemed unavailable.
Glasner is one of those they pursued after his impressive stint at Crystal Palace so far. And so Bayern made their move, looking to tempt him away from Selhurst Park.
Their efforts were short lived, though, with reports in Germany making it clear that Crystal Palace had demanded as much as €100m if they were to allow their manager to leave.
That would have smashed all previous records in terms of managers and so the move was quickly abandoned, with the German giants instead hiring Vincent Kompany from Burnley.
Everyone is now happy but that’s not stopped Hoeneß from stirring the pot as he discussed various managers who had been linked with Bayern.
“(Glasner) absolutely wanted to move to FC Bayern,” he said.
“FC Bayern is not so omnipotent that we can tell the president of Crystal Palace that you have to release him now.
“Perhaps it was a hint of fate that many things didn’t work out. Now we have a coach with whom a rebuild and a fresh start is possible. And when we meet again in a year, we’ll see what comes of it.”
That’s absolutely no need for Hoeneß to stir the Glasner point, but it’s entirely in character.
