Barcelona aren’t expected to buy João Cancelo from Manchester City anytime soon, the Spanish media says.
Marca writes that even though the club want the fullback to stay for the next season, that doesn’t mean they will invest in his purchase.
It’s highlighted that Cancelo has been doing very well during his spell from Manchester City, especially because he gives Barça the option to use him on both sides of the pitch.
The Catalan club, however, have a well known economic issue, and with him valued at between €25m and €35m, they have no capacity to afford that.
That’s why the idea is to try a new loan. It’s pointed out that Barcelona president Juan Laporta has an ‘excelent relationship’ with Cancelo’s agent Jorge Mendes, and that could help them get a deal.
Both club and player believe Manchester City would accept a new loan, especially because Pep Guardiola doesn’t want him in England. The real approach is only set to be made at the right time, probably after the end of the season.
Barcelona are going to try and be as cheeky as possible with their attempt for Cancelo, and try to get him low cost or no cost.
The player doing an interview at the weekend and essentially calling Guardiola a liar may not be a coincidence. Barcelona have long felt they could use the breakdown in relationship to their advantage in negotiations, so to break that down even more may be a tactic.
