Ian Maatsen was one of the new players to arrive at Aston Villa in the summer window. The Premier League side took the left-back from Chelsea and gave him a six-year deal.
Unai Emery has mainly used the 22-year-old as a substitute. He’s clocked in 200 minutes from seven matches, of which 90 were in the EFL Cup win over Wycombe Wanderers.
Maatsen’s situation at Aston Villa has seen Ronald Koeman, the Netherlands manager, leave him out of the squad for October’s international break.
His former club, Borussia Dortmund, seem to be frustrated with his limited role at Villa Park. Fussball Transfers say the fullback is ‘sorely missed’ at the Bundesliga side.
Dortmund wanted to retain the player and were willing to offer up to €25m. This wasn’t enough for Chelsea, who reportedly collected around €44.5m from Aston Villa.
BVB manager Nuri Şahin has used centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck on the left side of the defence. The website states this is because Şahin is yet to find his ideal left-back at BVB.
This, coupled with Maatsen’s situation at Aston Villa makes Dortmund frustrated for failing to sign him in the summer.
