Ajax need to ‘clear the way’ for Burnley striker Wout Weghorst by selling either Brian Brobbey or Chuba Akpom.
That’s according to De Telegraaf, relayed by Voetbal 4 U, who report that Weghorst has been left ‘in the waiting room’ this summer.
Weghorst wants to leave Burnley this summer, after previously making it clear he did not want to play in the Championship previously.
He’s been linked with clubs across Europe for months as a result, with the striker seemingly swimming in offers but unable to decide what he wants to do.
Ajax are one of the sides to be continually linked as they continue to rebuild their squad this summer but already have several strikers on their books and so haven’t pushed forward to get him from Burnley as yet.
De Telegraaf now report that unless one of Brobbey or Akpom were to leave, it would be very difficult for Ajax to justify signing Weghorst as well. The problem is, neither of those two players have anyone looking to sign them either.
“If Brobbey or Akpom do not leave, Weghorst’s arrival will simply be very difficult,” journalist Mike Verweij reports to De Telegraaf.
“That is why Akpom really has to go. To clear the way for Weghorst. There is not yet a storm of interest, so Weghorst is still in the waiting room.
“Akpom played in Serbia, but actually he didn’t. Ajax simply played with ten men. Then it became clear that Ajax wants and needs to get rid of that very quickly.”
