Hugo Lloris has kept only two clean sheets for Tottenham Hotspur in all competitions since mid-October, out of which one came in their win over Fulham on Monday.
The goalkeeper’s recent form for Spurs has seen them look for an alternative in the market.
Napoli’s Alex Meret is identified as one of the targets as La Repubblica stated on Tuesday that he is ‘desired’ by Tottenham to become Lloris’ long-term successor.
The Italy international’s contract expires in 2024 and Napoli retain an option to extend it by a year. Meret’s agent has admitted he is in talks with the Serie A side over his renewal, while also revealing his client has attracted interest from the Premier League.
“I am talking to Napoli for the renewal, but there are also English clubs interested,” Federico Pastorello said, relayed by Sportitalia.
“In recent days, Meret’s agent has revealed that there are English clubs interested in the boy, namely Tottenham. Should an important offer ever arrive in the summer, I don’t exclude that Alex could also leave,” Tutto Napoli quoted Venerato as saying.
“Maybe Napoli have signed Gollini also in view of the possible Caprile operation with Bari. Up until two years ago, Pierluigi was considered one of the most important goalkeepers.
“Even if Napoli’s intention is to renew Meret’s contract, trying to satisfy his requests as far as possible. Napoli always have the threat there, because the contract expires in 2024, but within it they have a unilateral option to extend it until 2025. Should Tottenham, however, have a proposal of €30m, we could even think of selling Alex.”
