Brazilian side Sao Paulo are concerned about Brentford’s interest in youngster Igão after the Bees made an initial enquiry about him.

That’s according to journalist Andre Hernan, who provides details on Brentford’s interest in the defender and how they could get him on the cheap.

A report earlier indicated that Brentford were interest in the 17-year-old centre-back, who has been impressing for Sao Paulo’s U20 side.

He’s very much considered a star for the future at the Brazilian club and has already made his debut in the first team, featuring in the 2-1 defeat to Botafogo in December.

That report indicated he is being watched by European clubs, as Brazilian talents usually are, and Brentford were one of the sides who were keen on him.

They’ve have seemingly started looking to the Brazilian market over the last year, bringing in Gustavo Nunes from Gremio in the summer transfer window and Igão could be targeted to continue on that front.

Hernan now details what’s going on behind the scenes and why the interest from Brentford is causing particular concern behind the scenes at Sao Paulo.

“He’s a player who’s been receiving a lot of praise and also naturally, with all this prominence, the European market ends up watching this player, right?” he said.

“Brentford, from England, has already made an enquiry. They’ve already asked about values and the length of his contract with São Paulo. So, it was just an enquiry. There’s no negotiation, there’s no offer on the table, for now but, an enquiry from an English club.

“Yes. Just like other clubs have already called to ask about the conditions, to probe that whole thing to understand what the market is for the kid. The player still has a year or so left on his contract with São Paulo. Obviously, São Paulo, concerned, understands that he is a very promising player and, obviously, will want to renew his contract to increase the fine, right?

“So, it is a situation in which São Paulo is watching and, importantly, this European market, this English market, keeping an eye on the Tricolor defender who has one more year, a little over a year left on his contract, his contract until September 2026.

“In other words, São Paulo has to keep an eye on it because if not, soon a club will come along, sign a pre-contract, take the player as has happened on other occasions with players, trained players.”
