Deivid Washington’s loan at Santos has ended earlier than expected, and the reasons behind Chelsea’s recall are being detailed in Brazil.

According to local outlet Itatiaia Esporte, the striker had returned to Vila Belmiro with high hopes, but the move never lived up to its initial promise.

One of the main drivers for the deal was Deivid’s own wish to wear the Santos shirt again alongside his idol, Neymar. The teenager had grown up at the club, and the idea of sharing a dressing room – and potentially a pitch – with the Brazilian star was a strong motivation.

Chelsea even turned down European offers in January to respect that choice and allow him to gain experience back home.

The expectation, however, did not match the reality. Across 23 appearances in all competitions and friendlies, Deivid scored only two goals. Despite the opportunities, he struggled to stand out and never found a consistent role.

His last outing came against Fluminense last Sunday, when he featured for just 28 minutes. With the gamble of sending him back to Brazil not producing the desired results, Chelsea decided to step in and bring him back, leaving questions about where the striker will continue his development.
