A few months ago, the Brazilian rumour mill was full of stories about the future of Chelsea defender Thiago Silva.
With Fluminense building a strong team, it was claimed the centre-back could head back to the Tricolor, where he always claimed he’d finish his career.
It turns out that Silva ended up signing a new deal with Chelsea and commiting himself to the Blues until 2024. Now in an interview with TNT Sports (via Globo Esporte), he explains the whole situation.
First of all, the player claims he wasn’t happy with the rumours in the Brazilian media, saying that his decision not to join Fluminense generated anger from the club’s fans, who went to attack him on social media.
“Now, at the end of the season, some annoying things happened, and I was very upset because it seems that they threw me against the fans: ‘Thiago will come back’. At no time did I say that I would return this year, not least because I had renewed with Chelsea two months ago.
“The news started to come out, it started to come out, nobody denied anything, and the fans came to my Instagram cursing me. Others supporting me. That wasn’t cool and I didn’t like it, honestly. But nothing erases the love and feeling I have for Fluminense of gratitude.”
Thiago Silva then claims he’s fully focused on Chelsea, and with his children playing for the club’s youth ranks, he says the kids don’t want to move to Brazil anytime soon. That should have a big impact on his chances of returning to Fluminense next year.
“The future belongs to God. Everyone knows how much I want to, however, nowadays it’s difficult to talk to the family, my children don’t want to live in Brazil. So it’s a very complicated situation, but we still have this year to think and see what we’re going to do next year.”
So this story should drag on a little more, with maybe not a happy ending for Fluminense.
