During the current international break, Timo Werner has been given 12 minutes for Germany against Iceland and a further 13 minutes against Romania.
It’s a step down for the Chelsea player, having started both games in the previous international window, including scoring two goals against Ukraine. The miserable season for the 25-year-old continues, with him only managing five Premier League goals since his big summer move to Stamford Bridge.
Had Werner thought joining up with Germany would be a nice positive break, he’s had something of a shock. Following dropping Werner, national manager Jogi Löw spoke to the media and explained his reasoning for the switch.
Bild report Werner was ‘a bit surprised’ to learn the reasoning when watching TV, presumably rather than via a one-to-one chat with the Germany boss. He was also disappointed with the reasons given, after Löw said Iceland played so deep there wouldn’t be enough space for the Chelsea man to exploit.
Werner is ‘anything but happy’ right now, and he’ll hope for more minutes against North Macedonia on Wednesday.
