KRC Genk goalkeeper Mike Penders isn’t clear whether he will be at Chelsea or another club next season.

Last summer, the Blues completed his signing and let him continue this season with the Belgian club.

On April 2nd, Genk technical director Dimitri De Condé stated they would like to retain him, but the final decision is down to Chelsea. Three days later, the stopper explained all options are open and will have a meeting with the west London club to decide his future.

Voetbal Krant state Enzo Maresca’s side could run Genk’s desire to retain the 19-year-old beyond this season.

He was mainly a substitute in the first half of the season and has featured regularly this year. Penders has kept five clean sheet and conceded eight goals from 11 league games so far.

Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation could open the door for the Belgium U21 international to arrive at Stamford Bridge sooner than expected.

Enzo Maresca has mainly used Robert Sánchez as the No.1 this season and when his form dipped, the manager replaced him with Filip Jörgensen. The Dane hasn’t been fully convincing.

The situation with the duo could see Chelsea have Penders at the club next season. The report even states they could take him for the FIFA Club World Cup in June.

The Premier League club believe in his qualities and want to test both him and Djordje Petrovic [on loan at RC Strasbourg] in the summer.

In this way, Chelsea can ‘throw a spanner in the works of Genk’s plans’ to retain Penders.
