Mats Wieffer has now revealed he didn’t consider the possibility of joining Liverpool before completing a move to Brighton & Hove Albion this summer.
The midfielder spent two years at Feyenoord, and left them for Brighton earlier this month. During his time at the Dutch club, he played under Arne Slot, who took over from Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool.
De Telegraaf had earlier stated that Liverpool made a last-ditch effort to hijack Brighton’s deal for the 24-year-old.
Viaplay had a chat with the Brighton summer signing, where he was asked if Liverpool were an option, and his comments are relayed by Voetbal Primeur.
When responding to that, he said: “There were a few clubs, but not really as concrete as Brighton. Liverpool were not actually an option.”
The Netherlands international has also revealed that Brighton followed him for a long time.
“I had been in discussions with Brighton for a long time and had the feeling that they really wanted me. Before I went to Feyenoord, I had already spoken to Union [Saint-Gilloise]. They work together with Brighton. So, they have actually known me for a very long time,” Wieffer explained.
The Dutchman claims this window was the right time for him to leave the Eredivisie side. He adds Brighton’s attractive brand of football and their model convinced him to make a switch to The Amex.
“I played well at Feyenoord for a year and a half and thought this was the right time for me to make this step,” he added.
“Especially when you see what Brighton have done in recent years. With training players, selling good players, the way of playing and how much they wanted me. These are all things that are very positive.”
Wieffer has signed a contract at Brighton lasting until 2029, and says he’s eagerly waiting to make his first Premier League appearance for the Seagulls.
