Brighton and Hove Albion have made a formal offer for Real Betis striker Borja Iglesias worth €20m plus variables.

That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who say Brighton made their first bid for the forward last night ahead of deadline day.

The Spanish club are not expecting any big departures today after selling three players yesterday but nothing can be completely ruled out at this stage.

They had been keeping an eye on a potential bid for Iglesias, knowing that Brighton were taking a look at him as well as several others.

That has now turned into a formal bid, with Brighton sending a ‘formal proposal’ of €20m plus and various variables which the newspaper does not detail. The bid was rejected by Betis who, in principle at least, won’t be selling the striker.

According to sources close to the operation, a new attempt by Brighton is not expected but nothing can be ruled out given the madness of deadline day.

Iglesias, for his part, is calm about the situation, recently insisting he is happy where he is and not pushing for a move but happy to depart if the club decide it is right.

It is up to Brighton to find an offer to make them think that, with their first one of €20m seemingly not coming close.
