Lucas Digne has suffered an early blow in his PSG career after leaving Aston Villa in the summer, as PSG have left him out of their latest squad.
L’Equipe report today that the former Aston Villa left-back has not been included in the PSG squad for the home game against Monaco on Friday evening.
The French champions announced the squad for that game – their third league game of the season. There was one notable surprise in that squad, the absence of Lucas Digne.
AS Monaco absence
The full-back returned to the club in the summer from Aston Villa. The plan is for him to be the back up to Nuno Mendes moving forwards.
But he’s endured a difficult start since returning to the club. And that’s led to him being left out of the squad for this game on ‘sporting grounds’.
More interestingly is that PSG have left him out despite Mendes being absent also as he’s serving the third and final match of a suspension.
It would have been the ideal time for Digne to feature – and indeed it was part of the reason he was signed – but instead he finds himself out of the squad entirely.
PSG differences
How long that is the case, remains to be seen. It’s not an ideal start for the 33-year-old. He would have returned to Paris knowing he was in for a different season. He presumably accepted that when he signed.
But PSG leaving him out this early, particularly with Mendes out of the picture, is eyebrow raising. He is perhaps getting a very early taste of the different expectations between Aston Villa and PSG.
He was undeniably first choice at Villa Park – even when he perhaps was not at his best – and almost guaranteed playing time. Now, though, it’s a very different situation at PSG, as Digne has learned about this week.
