Rodrigo Vilca joined Newcastle United from Peruvian side Deportivo Municipal in 2020 but hasn’t made his senior team debut.

The 25-year-old initially started with the Magpies’ U21 side, before being sent out on loan to Doncaster Rovers, Club Universitario de Deportes and FK Voždovac. He’s been with the latter since last summer.

Former Newcastle midfielder Nolberto Solano insists he was pleased to see his compatriot join the Tyneside club but accepts the transfer hasn’t worked out for him. His quotes are relayed by today’s edition of Diario Correo.

“It was a joy that a Peruvian footballer reached the Premier League. However, sometimes national players have a full season and go abroad, but it’s not very easy. There are processes, especially when they are very young. Everything happened very quickly,” he said.

It’s not the first time the 49-year-old has talked about the player’s situation at Newcastle.

Vilca’s deal with the Premier League side runs down in June and Solano had earlier stated that he expects the South American to leave the club as a free agent in the summer. He also expressed his disappointment over the midfielder’s failure to make it at Newcastle United.

“No, he won’t stay at Newcastle. I think this is his last year, the reason? Rodrigo is 23 [25] years old, he’s not a youth player anymore. So, if he hasn’t been able to make that leap it’s a shame, because he’s been loaned out everywhere, he’s had to play here in the third division. I think this will be his last year, if I’m not mistaken,” Solano told Infobae, relayed by America TV.

This deal hasn’t worked out well for either Vilca or Newcastle, and a summer exit seems the best solution for both parties.
