Barcelona, Valencia and Porto are all set to benefit from Newcastle United’s €56m deal to sign Nico González from Manchester City.
Super Deporte report that the Spanish and Portuguese clubs are set to receive their share of the midfielder’s move to St James Park after it was finalised this week.
The newspaper explains that González’s move to Newcastle has triggered a distribution of nearly 5%, in unequal shares, among his three previous clubs.
Barcelona benefit most
As a result, Barcelona will receive an extra €1.9m, having had the 24-year-old in their academy.
He played for Barcelona youth, then the U16s, U19s, and B side before moving into the first team in 2021. He then spent a year on loan at Valencai before joining Porto for €21.2m in 2023.
A €60m move to Manchester City followed in 2025 but only lasted for a year before he then joined Newcastle United this week in a €56m transfer.
Because of that move, Barcelona will receive an extra €1.9m from their former youth product while Porto will receive €560,000. Valencia are due to get €280,000.
Wait until January
All three sides will have to wait, though. Super Deporte report that the funds will not be available immediately but will be delayed until ‘practically the January transfer window’. Why that is the case, isn’t made clear.
Valencia are very glad to receive the funds either way. Super Deporte explains that ‘money always comes in handy’ for the Spanish club, especially with the transfer window in mind.
They have five days left to bring in at least two players. The budget that the club’s owners, Meriton, have allocated CEO Ron Gourlay is ‘very tight’. Thus ‘any help is welcome’.
While they’ll have to wait, they may still be able to use the funds from Nico González’s move to Newcastle to their advantage.
