Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has torn his cruciate ligaments and is now set for months on the sidelines.

That’s according to journalist Gaston Edul, who provides the worst news for Manchester United today after the Argentine limped out of the defeat to Crystal Palace.

Edul is a prominent Argentine journalist who works for TyCSports, which is the largest sports news organisation in the country. As such he often gets scoops on national team players.

“Lisandro Martínez had a rupture of the cruciate ligaments so he will not be able to play more in what is left of this European season and he will return after half a year, there are approximately between six and eight months of recovery depending on each one,” he reported via a video on his X account today.

That information will come as a significant blow to Manchester United, who had feared the worst for the defender after he left the game against Crystal Palace following an awkward fall late in the 82nd minute.

The injury will be the latest significant one of his career and another to add to the list of big injuries he’s suffered at Manchester United since arriving in 2023.

He’s already missed 78 days and 14 games for club and country with a metatarsal fracture, 106 days and 26 games with a foot injury, 55 days and 10 games with a knee injury and 30 days and six Manchester United games between April and May last year with a calf strain.

Indeed, since 2019 he has missed 69 games for club and country with various injuries and 371 days on the treatment table.

The hope for Manchester United is that he can bounce back from this latest injury and return next season.
