Wesley Edens, one of the co-owners of Aston Villa, has held ‘exploratory talks’ regarding an investment in Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães.
That’s according to Record, who say that he met with the chairman of the club Pinto Lisboa earlier this month.
Edens is the co-owner of Aston Villa alongside Egyptian Nassef Sawiris after the pair bought a majority stake from Tony Xia back in 2018.
Aston Villa are not his only sporting venture as he’s also the owner of American baseball side the Milwaukee Bucks, and it seems he’s planning to grow his venture, or at least exploring the opportunity.
Following those talks, he travelled to Guimarães alongside Aston Villa sporting director Johan Lange, where he ‘got to know’ the club’s stadium Estádio D. Afonso Henriques as well as some of the club’s other infrastructure and the city itself.
The newspaper makes it clear that any deal is likely to be a complicated one that would have to ‘go through the sieve’ of the club’s associates.
There is also an issue with the current ownership’s shares, as they are in the process of buying shares from former investor Mário Ferreira.
Presumably, that would need to be concluded before Edens could then buy shares in the club, although the Aston Villa chief appears to have gotten the ball rolling regardless.
