By chasing Victor Gyokeres, Arsenal will be trying to sign one of the most wanted players in the world, as the Sporting striker had a fantastic first season with the Lions.
Now even though the 41 goals and 15 assists he had this season so far make it obvious there’ll be a big battle for him, the Portuguese media claims there’s a chance he stays in Lisbon.
That’s today reported by newspaper Record, who explain that Sporting are ready for the ‘Operation Gyokeres’, which consists of convincing the player to stay at the club.
The Lions are said to be gathering some arguments to tell the striker he should play for the Lions for another season, especially with manager Ruben Amorim expected to stay.
Arsenal do not get a mention this time, although the outlet does claim it’s mostly Premier League clubs who have the financial conditions to pay for his €100m release clause.
Sporting have just won the Portuguese League, also guaranteeing a place in the Champions League next season, and such a promising year will be the basis to try to convince Gyokeres to stay.
It should then be up to Arsenal, who’ve been labelled as one of the strong competitors, to bring some arguments to the table as well. Perhaps a Premier League title is something that would go well in the conversation.
