Former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum looks set for a return to England as Paris Saint Germain plan wholesale changes after their Champions League exit.
That’s according to L’Equipe, who say the Dutchman is one of several players who could be shipped out of Paris this summer.
PSG were dumped out of the Champions League by Real Madrid earlier this week, blowing a 2-0 lead on aggregate to again somehow fall short in the knockout stages of the competition.
The defeat has led to a lot of introspection at the Parc des Princes and L’Equipe report that there will be a ‘response’ to the disappointment.
Nasser al-Khelaifi has already planned several meetings in Qatar, and these will involve discussions for the squad moving forwards.
Wijnaldum is one of those who will be shipped out, having failed to find his place in the team since his arrival from Liverpool.
He left Anfield on a free transfer last summer, but it’s stated ‘acknowledgement of failure is shared’ between him and the club. In other words, both parties accept it hasn’t worked out, and he’ll have to leave.
Fortunately for the French giants, Wijnaldum ‘still has market value’ in England and finding a club to take him back to the Premier League shouldn’t be too difficult.
Liverpool are unlikely to be among those suitors having successfully moved on since his departure last year, but we’re sure the Dutch international will ask anyway.
