Wolverhampton Wanderers’ João Gomes has publicly expressed his desire to return to Flamengo.

Coluna Do Fla, a website dedicating its coverage to the Brazilian club, covers the 24-year-old’s comments.

The Wolves player climbed through the ranks of Flamengo’s youth system and made his way into their first team in 2020.

He made 122 appearances for his former club and left them to join the Premier League side in January 2023.

Julen Lopetegui was in charge when Gomes arrived at Molineux, and he has been regular under Gary O’Neil and now under Vítor Pereira. The 24-year-old played 86 games so far for Wolves, managing seven goals and three assists in the process.

His impressive performances for Wolves helped him make debut for Brazil in March 2024. Last month, the English club rewarded Gomes with a new contract until 2030 with an option for another year.

Despite signing an extension, it hasn’t stopped the player from talking about wanting to return to Flamengo.

“Absolutely [I plan on returning]. Flamengo is… Everyone knows how much I care about this club, which made me who I am today. I was there for many years, right? Almost my whole life. Absolutely, in the future. Absolutely,” he said.

It’s unlikely for Gomes or Wolves to be open to a transfer nor could Flamengo afford to buy him in the summer window. A potential return to his old club would take place at a later stage of his career.
