Former Spartak Moscow defender Sergey Gorlukovich has spoken to Russian website Sport Express and shared his thoughts about Premier League linked winger Quincy Promes.
Promes was linked with a move to Southampton in January after reports the Premier League side tabled an offer for the Spartak Moscow attacker.
Gorlukovic said on the player’s future: “Promes did a lot of good things for Spartak Moscow. We are happy to have him but we must qualify to the Champions League next summer in order to keep him. If we fail to do that, then I think he could likely to leave for a European club.”
During the last window we covered reports from Russia that Southampton were not prepared to meet Promes’ €30m release clause, and would only offer €27m.
However, there were claims the Netherlands international was entitled to 15% of the transfer fee, so to get an agreement with Spartak Moscow, Southampton would have had to pay closer to €35m.
If Southampton are to go back in for the Dutchman this summer it’s likely they would have to maintain their Premier League status, which isn’t looking good at the moment.
Spartak Moscow are struggling to qualify for next season’s Champions League which could result in Promes leaving.
