Former Aston Villa and Sunderland goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen has revealed he was on the verge of a move to Tottenham Hotspur, but his manager Martin O’Neill pulled the plug on the deal.

At the time of Tottenham’s interest the Dane was at Aston Villa, but wasn’t getting games under O’Neill.

In an interview with Ekstra Bladet, Sorensen was quizzed about his poor relationship with O’Neill when he confirmed the Aston Villa boss vetoed his move to Tottenham: “I was on my way to Tottenham where Paul Robinson was having a bad period. We actually agreed, it was 11 in the evening on deadline day. It was a lease agreement for six months, and then my contract would expire. But at twelve o’clock O’Neill called and said, No, nothing will happen. He didn’t give any reason.”

Despite missing out on a transfer to Tottenham, Sorenson did eventually move on when his contract expired at Aston Villa. The former Denmark international joined Stoke City in 2008, but it still seems it was a missed opportunity he didn’t get a transfer to White Hart Lane.

With Robinson struggling at the time a move to Tottenham could have benefited the London side and Sorensen, given he was being snubbed by O’Neill.

In total Sorensen spent seven seasons in England playing for Sunderland, Aston Villa and Stoke City. The 41 year old also made 101 appearances for Denmark.
