The best thing about the week after the end of the transfer window is that you get to know about deals that almost happened, and the reasons why they collapsed.
The Chilean press have got involved and claimed Pumas’ Nico Castillo came very close to joining Premier League side Burnley, but was stopped because he didn’t have an EU passport.
CDF learned about Burnley’s interest four days before the end of the transfer window, but the club didn’t have enough time to solve a visa issue.
CDF’s Wood claim may be stretching it. Burnley had made several attempts to sign the player from Leeds United, with the Championship club holding firm for a while.
It was only when Wood went public with his desire to play for Burnley, and lack of desire to take to the pitch for Leeds United, that things really got going. Leeds then agreed to the deal, and brought in their own late signings Paweł Cibicki and Pierre-Michel Lasogga.
CDF claims this shouldn’t be the end of the hunt for Castillo, not only for Burnley, but also for the other European sides who are interested in him. A January move is suggested and a few more Chile caps, or higher price, likely needed to help a work permit through.
The 24-year-old has 13 goals in 20 matches since signing for Mexican side Pumas at the start of the year.
