Over the past few days we’ve been covering reports from Portugal regarding a tussle between Ipswich Town and Sporting CP to sign Fotis Ioannidis from Panathinaikos.
The Liga Portugal champions have been seriously working on signing the striker for weeks. They see him as someone who can grow like Viktor Gyokeres did with them, and he’d provide cover in case the former Coventry City player leaves before the window closes.
At first there wasn’t any serious competition for Sporting, and then Ipswich Town appeared from nowhere with an offer. There were claims in Greece of a €22.5m bid from the newly promoted Premier League side.
Tuesday’s edition of A Bola now reveals the actual figures of Ipswich’s offer for Fotis Ioannidis. According to the Portuguese newspaper, it was €17.5m as a fixed fee and €4.5m in potential bonuses.
That bonuses figure doesn’t quite make up the big percentage that was previously being insinuated. Nevertheless it was rejected and Ipswich would have to offer more.
Sporting are ready to improve on their €18m flat fee, and they feel they have the preference of the player thanks to Champions League football among other things.
Still, a fee needs agreeing with Panathinaikos before he goes anywhere.
