Lille are showing ‘keen interest’ in Southampton’s Sékou Mara as a potential replacement for Jonathan David as he continues to be linked with a move away.

That’s according to Sport.fr, who say the French side are considering a loan move during the January transfer window.

Mara has been at Southampton since an €11.5m move in July 2022 but has struggled to replicate the performances he managed at Bordeaux, with just three goals and four assists in 45 games so far.

He’s barely featured for them this season in the Championship and thus a ‘loan could be beneficial’ for him, particularly as he still aspires to be a part of the squad for the upcoming Olympics.

Thus, it would be a ‘mutually beneficial solution’ for all parties, including Southampton, who could temporarily get rid of a player they don’t seem to want at this moment in time.

The plan seems to be something of an overly optimistic one from Lille, though, particularly if they’re planning to sell Jonathan David and replace him with Mara.

David is no finished package by any means but his record of 65 goals and 11 assists in 159 games for the French side is something it seems Mara, given his performances over the last 18 months at Southampton, isn’t going to be able to replicate any time soon.
