Club ‘already anticipating’ Tottenham’s approach for player – ‘Renewal impasse’ could benefit Spurs

Last month, A Bola reported Tottenham Hotspur will be watching Sporting’s Manuel Ugarte in action for Uruguay at the World Cup.

The midfielder was unused substitute for three matches as Uruguay were knocked out of the group stages.

Although Tottenham couldn’t follow the 21-year-old in Qatar, they continue to be in the picture to sign him.

Record on Saturday have a report discussing his contract situation. The South American’s contract lasts until 2026, with a €60m release clause and an annual salary of €350,000.

The Lions have tabled a proposal that will see his wages increase to between €500,000 to €600,000 per year. However, Ugarte’s agent wants at least €700,000 post taxes. Due to this difference, the report states the ‘renewal suffers impasse’.

Sporting also want to raise the Uruguay international’s clause to €80m with the new deal since they are ‘already anticipating’ approaches from other clubs. Only Tottenham are tagged in the report as they have set their sights on the midfielder.

The situation is ‘not ideal’, and Sporting have a meeting is scheduled with the player’s agent, Jorge Chijane, next week to unblock the impasse.

Sporting are aware of the need to raise the clause from €60m to €80m since there are clubs, including Tottenham, looking at Ugarte.
