While there has been a lot of talk about Charles de Ketelaere’s poor form at Milan, his place at the World Cup has never been questioned.
That is until now, as the player, who had a chance to sign for Leeds United, is playing so badly that Corriere dello Sport explain the question of him being left out of Roberto Martinez’s squad for the tournament is ‘legitimate’.
Jesse Marsch’s side were one of a few wanting to sign the Belgium international from Club Brugge in the summer, and were prepared to pay more than Milan for his services.
However, the Serie A side having just won the league and the ability to play in the Champions League turned the tables in the Italians’ favour, leaving Leeds without the playmaker they wanted.
Despite spending €35m fee, Milan have yet to get anything out of De Ketelaere, bar the one assist, and his last appearance for them was as disappointing as it gets.
Corriere dello Sport state he ‘seems to be the weak link’ in the attack these days, which has led to a ‘lot of expense and little yield’.
This will frustrate Leeds even more, since Marsch clearly wanted the player at Elland Road, and will have had a plan to get him to continue his great Club Brugge form into the Premier League.
He is seen as a €35m ‘that is disappointing for now’, and Milan will want that to turn around very quickly, while Leeds watch on, wondering what could have been, as they currently struggle for goals and creativity.
