Birmingham City’s Kristian Pedersen has revealed he came close to joining Newcastle United in the last window.
The 27-year-old mainly operated as a left-back last season, while also being used as a left wing back in a handful of games.
His performances convinced Steve Bruce, who is no longer at the club, and the former Magpies manager was keen on bringing the Denmark international to St James’ Park in the summer.
“It was close with Newcastle in the summer. The club got a call from Steve Bruce, who is now fired. He said he really wanted me, but it didn’t work out in the end, because there were some things that had to succeed before the ends could meet,” Pedersen told bold.dk.
The fullback expressed his disappointment over his failed move to the Tyneside club and is now unsure whether he will be handed another opportunity to join the Premier League side.
“Watford have been there before, but it was a long time ago, but otherwise there is always little interest here and there, and it is not something that has become concrete.”
Pedersen is in his final year of contract at Birmingham City and although he is happy at the Championship side, he is of the belief there will be more options next summer, if he decides against signing a new deal.
“We’re in dialogue, and they’d like to extend. I’m happy to be here and focus on doing well for the club, but now we’ll see what happens,” the Dane stressed.
“I have set a goal from the start that I want to be in the Premier League. I have played a few years in the Championship, where I have been and still am really happy at Birmingham, so I feel ready and that is my biggest dream.
“Other doors open when you have contract expirations, and especially when you play every match. I’ve been a regular for almost four years and it opens some doors for me and I hope it can open the door to the highest level. It would also help me in terms of making a name for myself on the national team.”
