When Manchester United sent Tahith Chong on loan to Werder Bremen last August, the Red Devils and the winger were hoping for regular opportunities to continue his development.

That didn’t happen, which saw reports suggesting the Old Trafford club were unhappy with the 21-year-old’s situation in Germany. These claims were then dismissed by Werder chief Frank Baumann.

However, Werder Bremen confirmed on Saturday the Dutchman’s loan deal had been cut short and that allowed Manchester United to send him out on loan to Club Brugge on the same day.

Baumann told the club’s official website Chong asked the club to terminate his temporary deal.

“Since we have been unable to guarantee him more playing time for the rest of the season, he approached us with the request to end his loan at Werder ahead of schedule. We have agreed to grant this request so that he will be able to find a club where he will be able to play first-team football more frequently,” Baumann said.

This is not the ‘whole truth’, according to Bild. It’s claimed there were a lot of concerns at Manchester United for several weeks over Chong’s limited playing time at Werder Bremen.

The attacker was left on the bench for the fourth consecutive match against Schalke on Friday.

The Premier League giants felt the player’s development could be ‘endangered’ if he continued not having opportunities.

Therefore, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side asked Werder Bremen to terminate Chong’s contract. The latter found it ‘acceptable’ since Romano Schmid has been getting more opportunities and it also helps the German club ‘save costs’.
