Tottenham Hotspur player Lucas Moura spoke to ESPN Brasil after the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.
The Brazilian, who even managed to score an equaliser in the second half, was pretty upset with the result, insisting Spurs need to improve in the final games of the season.
Speaking to ESPN reporter João Castelo Branco, Moura was first asked if Tottenham deserved at least a draw at Anfield.
“I believe so. I think it was a great game. A game worthy of two great teams, worthy of the Premier League,” Lucas Moura told ESPN Brasil. “But we played equally, and I think that for a bigger time in the game, we were even better. But at this level, we can’t fail. And there at the end, we made a mistake and they scored the goal.
“It’s a very bad taste, because we were getting a good result, against Liverpool, who are fighting up there, and there’s this bad taste at the last minute. But I think the team behaved very well throughout the game, we managed to control the game well, we managed to neutralise their attack. I think we even had more clear chances. But it was a great game. We have to raise our heads, keep working. Now we can’t fail again. The battle is very fierce there. Let’s go to the next one.”
Asked if the defeat has hurt even more because of Tottenham’s league standing and recent run of results, Lucas said: “Also because we haven’t won in five, six Premier League games. A team who want to stay in the top four, we can’t continue in this situation. We have to win, we have to add more points. Even because those who are behind are coming. But let’s work hard, I think that in the game on Wednesday the new stadium opens, it will give an extra boost, it will give us an extra force. Playing really at home now, and I’m sure we’ll make a great game.”
Although Spurs are currently third in the table with 62 points, they are followed by Manchester United with 61, and Arsenal and Chelsea with 60. So a bad set of results could drop them to the sixth place.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side now face Crystal Palace on Wednesday, and then change tournaments as they prepare to play Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League’s quarterfinals.
