Making a big deal about West Ham’s apparent desire to sign Maxi Gomez before the end of the transfer window, the English media had everyone excited.
Claims the Hammers were considering paying the Uruguayan’s full release clause (€50m) and then loaning him back to Celta Vigo eventually made it to Spain, but those close to the La Liga side appear a bit in the dark about it all.
Faro de Vigo, a local outlet, reported on Sunday there had been no ‘confirmation’ of West Ham’s intent to pay the release clause in the Spanish club, creating some sort of ‘suspense’.
Furthermore, they explained ‘it appears’ Maxi Gomez isn’t ‘fully convinced’ that moving to West Ham would be the ‘best option for him at the moment’.
The official line from Celta Vigo, as of Sunday, was that they hadn’t heard from the Hammers since the Premier League club’s decision to send ‘emissaries’ to offer €35m up front + €10m in bonuses, which was refused, followed by the simple message the forward would only leave if his release clause was triggered.
Marko Arnautovic’s decision to stay until the end of the season (at least) has calmed things down a bit, so this might be something West Ham put on the back burner until the summer.
