Guido Carrillo failing to become a regular goalscorer for Southampton wasn’t such a surprise, his recent record helped predict as much.
Very much a personal pick of Mauricio Pellegrino, it was clear that when the manager was shown the exit door, the striker would find things difficult.
With the Saints likely regretting the transfer outlay, around £20m, very quickly indeed, Carrillo was sent to Leganes on loan for the season, reuniting with Pellegrino.
So far he’s scored one goal in 458 La Liga minutes. It was against Real Madrid, so one to remember, and an equaliser to make the game 1-1. That’s the positive slant, unfortunately Madrid went on to score three more, and Carrillo’s strike was a penalty.
There’s not much latin about Southampton, so perhaps it’s natural Carrillo prefers the Madrid culture.
Asked is Pellegrino was key in the transfer, the footballer explained: “It is clear that Mauricio was the link to reach Leganes. The relationship with him is very good, normal and with respect. We abide by the decisions he makes.”
